This Water Closet has a  "trap" i.e the bend in the pipe where the waste goes out of the toilet.This "trap" in this case "p" stops foul gasses and water from flowing back into the bowl and your bathroom. They also serve as a filter for debris and other objects that might stop waste water from flowing through your sewage pipes.
